Japanese professional wrestler Kanako Urai (born September 26, 1981) is now signed to WWE and competes under the ring name Asuka. In June 2004 she debuted in the AtoZ promotion as a professional wrestler using the ring name Kana. She stayed there until March 2006, when she retired. A year and a half later, she made her return to professional wrestling and began working as a freelancer for organizations like JWP Joshi Puroresu, NEO Japan Ladies Pro Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Wave, Reina Joshi Puroresu, Smash, and Wrestling New Classic. She has won the Wave Tag Team Championship, NEO Tag Team Championship, Reina World Women’s Championship, Smash Diva Championship, and JWP Openweight Championship among other titles.

Urai and WWE agreed to a developmental contract in August 2015. Asuka was promoted to the main roster in September 2017 after spending two years in WWE’s developmental division NXT, where she won the Female Competitor of the Year award twice (in 2016 and 2017) and the Overall Competitor of the Year award once (in 2017). Her 510-day reign as NXT Women’s Champion was the longest of any title in the company’s post-national expansion era. Her 914-day “greatest unbeaten streak in WWE history” is another claim made by the business. She took first place in the women’s Royal Rumble bout in January 2018.
