LOS ANGELES — Elliot Handler, the co-founder of the Mattel toy company who launched the Barbie doll, has died.
“Mr. Handler’s memory will live on through the toys he helped to introduce to generations of children,” the Toy Industry Association said Friday in a statement mourning the death of “‘The ‘Father of Barbie’ and other classic brands.”
Handler’s wife, Ruth, had designed the iconic doll and her husband was credited with naming the toy after the couple’s daughter, Barbara.
